Fashionable Utility

The weather, although temperamental, seems to have finally decided to stay cold; we think. Either way we both know you’re going to need the latest and greatest of jackets to keep your limbs warm at some point in the near future.

This season one of my favorite outer-wear trends is the Utility jacket, a.k.a. the Military jacket. Should you choose to take on this trend (which I think you should), there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, when you think of a utility jacket what do you imagine? Men? Military? Army green? You catch my drift… Not exactly feminine or sexy. In order to counter act this preconceived notion of utility jackets it’s important to wear them with something more romantic and girly. Please don’t take the trend to the extreme and find matching accessories like the photo below.

Instead, pair your jacket with a lace top, a floral scarf, a funky belt or even a flowy dress (as long as it’s not too chilly outside). Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson, Olivia Palermo and Reese Witherspoon perfect the look in the picture below.

It’s also important to choose the right utility jacket, rather than the first one you come across. Here are a few of my favorite styles:

JCrew downtown field jacket. Found at http://www.jcrew.com

I love the gold button detail of the JCrew jacket pictured above; noticeable but not overbearing.

Vince cotton utility jacket. Found at http://www.nordstrom.com

The internal drawstring at the waist of the above Vince jacket really caught my attention. This feature is a surefire way to make any figure look more slim; who doesn’t love that?

Old Navy womens cropped utility jacket. Found at http://www.oldnavy.com

Bonus! The above jacket also has an internal drawstring, and it’s super cute. I should also mention that because it’s from Old Navy it’s a fabulous price too (only $22.99!).

Alright ladies, I’ve given you the do’s and don’ts; now go out there and utilize your utility!
